There’s still a hope
I hope the handling after disaster will be better in the future. No need to wait for a call for help, but to react quickly, instead. People need aids as soon as possible. If all of these disaster management units must do a special pratical handling after disaster, then they should do it early. In Indonesia Health Department, there’s BSB (Brigade Siaga Bencana / The Disaster Alert Brigade) which will give medical aids for the victims, but their number is too small rather than the number of people that they must help. It’s surprising since Indonesia has tons of medical doctors over the country. Overall, I hope they will do their work the best.
As we know that Indonesia located in the ring of fire which made Indonesia as an earthquake potential. We can’t avoid the disaster, but at least we should know the signs early, so we can prepare and prevent ourselves from the worst thing that might happen. We should live with nature not as enemy, but as friend. If we built something on West Sumatra land, make sure that those buildings were adjusted to the nature of West Sumatra. I know it’s more expensive and there’s no guarantee whether it will work or not, but at least we has prepared ourselves the best. There’s a survivor from Indonesia Bank in Padang. He said that he was in the second building of the Indonesia Bank. There’re two buildings and the second building, in which he sheltered, was built by adjusting to earthquake. Amazing, while the first building got many damages, the second building didn’t get any.
If we know that our land are earthquake potential, then we should have an emergency shelter around. The shelter should protect people before, during and after disaster. I can not say how big the shelter and how many shelter sould be built. But, we might learn something from here. Government must see this. If pet can have it, why people can’t? It’s just a matter of time.

There’re a few local NGOs that you might contact with. One of them is MER-C (Medical Emergency Rescue Committee) which the branch office is in Medan, North Sumatra. Message for the World
We know that we can’t avoid the disaster. On the other side we always protect ourselves from any pain. Some of us call this earth as an enemy, said that nature is a silent monster, blood-thirsty, and other scary thing. But, it’s wrong. It’s a misperception. Nature shouldn’t be our enemy. It’s a mother’s land. This earth is our home. For thousands years, this will always be our home. Don’t let the sadness make us judge the nature. This’s could be our own fault. ‘Mother’ must have tried to remind us, but we’ve never pay attention to listen to her. What kind of ‘children’ are we? Instead, we misdoubted each signal. We did not believe any predictions.
Things must change. In the future, let the nature be our best friend on which we can rely. Because, there’s no place like earth.
