WALL PAINT, BETWEEN POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE EFFECT

Posted on November 24th, 2009 in Inner Healing At Home , ,

Painting the WallOur house looks beautiful not just because of the exterior and interior design, but more than that it because of the wall paint. You can colour your life by adding more colour to your house. Each colour represents your feeling and personality. Add more blue to give wider-room effect. Add more yellow to give a good appetite effect to your family. Add more purple to give you a spiritual nuance. There’re more about these colour that I don’t mention here. Until here, there’s nothing wrong with the wall paint.

People notice something unhealthy in the wall paint. It contains such as Mercury, Formaldehyde, Lead (Pb), VOC (Volatile Organic Compound). Let’s discuss them one by one.

Lead

A grey silver metal. It’s used for plumbing in Ancient Rome, so it’s also called as Plumbum (Pb). It gives colour for the paint. Lead pigments were used in lead paint for white as well as yellow, orange, and red. Most have been discontinued due of the dangers of lead poisoning. Lead chromate is used to give green, yellow, and red colour. Lead chromium is to give green, yellow, and orange. Cadmium to give green, yellow, orange, and red colour. The lead paints were usually used between 1950-1960, until it’s forbidden in 1978 when it’s found that many children were poisoned with lead. It means that any house before 1978 might have used lead paint for their interior.

Lead is a poisonous metal that can damage nervous connections (especially in young children) and cause blood and brain disorders. Lead poisoning typically results from ingestion of food or water contaminated with lead; but may also occur after accidental ingestion of contaminated soil, dust, or lead based paint.

According to US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, in 1994 the proportion of children tested who had blood lead levels (BLLs) more than 10mg/dl (threshold) are 100% among children age <2 years; and 80% among childre age 3-5 years. During 1994-1999, the prevalence of elevated BLLs declined : 51% among children aged <12 months, 42% among children aged 12–36 months, and 46% among children aged 36–72 months.

Children are more sensitive 30 times than adult in home pollution. Lead toxicity study shows that BLLs 68 ug/l make more agresive children, less concentration, and cause cancer for long term. BLLs 100 ug/l is a level action to make bad effects for children such as growth disorder and behavioral problem. BLLs 450 ug/l needs urgency treatment within 48 hours. BLLs more than 700 ug/l are a medical emergency status. BLLs more than 1200 ug/l are the lethal dose for children.

I don’t know what kind of chemical substance in the recent wall paint, whether there’s lead or not. However, one thing that you must know is the source of lead is not coming only from paint. In another word, paint is only one of the lead source.

Mercury

Many paint companies have used phenylmercuric acetate as a preservative to prolong the shelf life of interior latex paint. Phenylmercuric acetate is routinely added by some paint manufacturers to interior latex (water-based) paint as a fungicide and bactericide to prolong the paint’s shelf-life. EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) permits interior latex paint to contain less than or equal to 300 ppm elemental mercury and exterior latex paint to contain less than or equal to 2000 ppm. However, neither the presence nor the concentration of mercury in the paint is required to be labeled on the paint can. Mercury may not lawfully be used in oil-based paint.

In August 1989, acrodynia, a form of mercury poisoning, occurred in a child exposed to paint fumes in a home recently painted with a brand containing 4.7 mmol of mercury per liter (at that time the Environmental Protection Agency’s recommended limit was 1.5 mmol or less per liter). Read more from NEJM.

Symptoms and signs included leg cramps; rash; itching; excessive perspiration; rapid heartbeat; intermittent low-grade fevers; irritability; marked personality change; insomnia; headaches; hypertension; swelling; redness and peeling of the hands, feet, and nose; weakness of the pectoral and pelvic girdles; and nerve dysfunction in the lower extremities. A urine mercury level of 65 ug/L was measured on a 24-hour urine collection. Treatment with intensive chelation therapy increased his urine mercury excretion 20-fold. Examination of his mother and two siblings found urine mercury levels greater than or approximately equal to his; his father had elevated, although lower, levels. Parents and siblings were asymptomatic, although electromyographic abnormalities were detected in one sibling.

This can be source of lead and mercuryFollowing 4 months of hospitalization with repeated courses of chelation therapy and intensive rehabilitation, the patient’s symptoms abated except for residual lower extremity weakness. Although electroneuromyographic abnormalities persist, he is able to walk and continues to improve.

Mercury is also associated with the cause of autism. The source is vaccination, called as Thimerosal. Unfortunately, we’re too busy to associate vaccine and autism. The vaccine is safe for children. So, where’s the possible source of mercury? Could it already ‘stay’ in your house all this time? You must be able to answer it now.
