<strong> <a href="http://careandhealed.com/2010/01/hard-to-believe/">ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE : HARD TO BELIEVE, EASY TO UNDERSTAND</a></strong><p><span class="rdetector_placeholder_before"></span> <div style="padding:1.2em;background-color:#HEX_HERE;line-height:1.4;">People in Indonesia always assume that alternative medicine was a kind of spiritual medication. It is based on the fact that many alternative practitioners came from people who have spiritual background, so they call the practitioners as <strong>DUKUN</strong>, means medicaster. This is not true. Besides medicaster is not someone who always has spiritual background, also alternative medicine did not come from medicaster practice. In fact, alternative medicine was inovated by people who have very big concern in healing therapy and some of them were physycian or medical practitioner. Eventhough, they have different perspective, they also have the same goal as modern medicine, which to give the best therapy for health problems. Just said, Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician, was the one who first proposed Homeopathy in 1976. Then, Andrew Taylor Still, a physician and surgeon, is known as father of Osteopathy. And Hippocrates, father of medicine, is known as the first advocate of naturopathic medicine.</p> <p>I have followed a one-day-acupunctur colloquium in 2004. It was not too difficult to understand about the basic principles of acupunctur therapy. However, the most problem came from the language. It used Chinese terms mostly. It is just hard to believe that how a small needle can stimulate nerve and relieve health problems without using drugs. We were introduced with meridian spot on the human body. I bet that even neurolog would not find this meridian spot theory in neurology books or journals. Some of them believed that meridian spot must be an unreal thing, whereas some of them did believe that it was a real one. It’s easy to understand, but still hard to believe.</p> <p>Once I talked to my colleague. His name is Gatot, MD, who is an internist right now. He learnt about acupuntur and gave his testimony. Anyway, it works.</p> <p style="height: 1.4em;"> <h2>Testimony based evidence</h2> <p>When people can get a lot of advantages from alternative medicine, there’re lack of scientific evidence to convince the skeptics how well suited alternative medicine to handle so many cases. It’s a testimony based evidence, not science based evidence. So, no wonder if scientist are very skeptical about alternative medicine.</p> <p><strong>National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine</strong> said that the claims that <strong>CAM</strong> (<em>Complementary and Alternative Medicine</em>) treatment providers make about their benefits can sound promising. However, researchers do not know how safe many CAM treatments are or how well they work. They said to him that there was no scientific evidence about complementary therapy whether it work or not, so better not try it. Modern medicine give highly concern to scientific evidence. Without it, any treatment will be based on trial and error. But, Dr. Mehmed Oz gave a very good answer. He wrote, “The reason is we learn about complementary medicine as scientist and curious researcher, then we will find out which one is the healing therapy, which one is not. But, we better don’t use double standard. If we use the same criteria in conventional medicine to complementary medicine, then our analysis process will disable us.”</p> <p>That’s the key. As a matter of fact, it was applied not only in complementary medicine, but also conventional medicine. The difference is there’s a few stastistical number for measuring the achievments of conventional treatment, while there’s rather little statistical number in complementary medicine. This would be a homework. But to be honest, it’s going to spend a lot of money to documenting any progress in complementary treatment since it needs years till the rest of life to proof it. Tell me, which company will give the fund for that purpose and what is the advantage for it? If modern medicine have a lot of giant pharmacies, what alternative medicine have? No fund means no statistic.</p> <p>However, we are the witnesses of these medicine. Until now, the best medicine still remains a mystery or may be it has never been existed. Or exist as the new world of future medicine.
