WHAT DID THEY SAY ABOUT ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE?

Posted on January 5th, 2010 in Alternative Medicine ,

Knowledge and IgnoranceTom is a friend of mine. He’s an expatriate doctor in the company I worked a year ago. One day, I met him in a restaurant and asked him about osteopathy. Osteopathy is quite popular in Europe and US. But, what I heard next was surprising me. He laughed and said, “I’ve no idea!”

September 2003, I followed an life-emergency-case-handling training at Advanced Cardiac Life Support course held on Jakarta. On final day, there’s a neurolog who gave her speech for us. She emphasized how important that course was. But, one statement from her sounded interesting. Based on her experiences, she said, “If you got stroke, don’t go to acupuncture, but find a neurolog.” I don’t know whether acupuncture can handle stroke case or not. In fact I’ve never found the best treatment for stroke case, even from modern medicine. My father was a neurolog. He died from stroke. So, stop blame other disciplines as if we have found the best solution.

When my uncle got stroke, there’s an alternative practitioner handled it. He came to my uncle’s house and did his job. He did it for free. What a very generous heart! But, there’s a little problem. He hated medical doctors so much, while he didn’t know that I’m a doctor. He said that patient came to him for hard case, whereas patient came to doctor for easy case. He also stimagtized that doctor only made the complaint worse, instead of better. I didn’t want to argue with him. I came to visit my uncle, not him. Eventually, I knew that he’s not a truly alternative pratactitioner as he got the skill from none and nowhere.

I told my friends about my interest in alternative medicine (note : it doesn’t mean I lost my interest in my basic medicine), but there’s no such school in Indonesia. I found other countries such as Germany, US, Australia have provided alternative schools. The reaction of my friends were dissapointing me. They said, “Stop your dream. It’s useless.” Oh gosh! What’s the problem with alternative medicine? Is it ineligible as medical treatment? When they think that alternative medicine are a kind of weird discipline of knowledge, they has already been part of the medicine itself. We can’t deny their existence, no matter how hard we try. They are exist because they really are. If this means that there’s another world of medicine out there, so let it be.

We might not care about alternative medicine or complementary medicine, never know how good they are, never care about their achievments in the last decade, but people care. When doctors said, “Who care?”, patients answered, “We do!” People will do anything to achieve their curing, the best solution for their pain, and take chance (also risk, too) for even an impossible way. We can’t regret of them. We proud of them, instead. Because of them, we are exist. Because of them, this medicine go forward. Because of them, ancient art became modern art.

Which one is the doctor, drug or you?

Which one is the doctor, drugs or you?Doctor, as I read, means teacher. Medical doctor is someone who can teach about medicine. For a better meaning, medical doctor is someone who have learnt about human anatomy, physiology, and various health problems, in order to give the best solution for them and to explain how to keep our body healthy. May be all of the matter is drug, but I’d like to emphasize that medical doctor is not a drug-oriented. He’s supposed to be a human-oriented. And human doesn’t always need drug for their health.

This describing sounds so naive, but it is true and I hope that is what should happened next. I remember we got pharmacology subject in college, and it’s not the only subject. We learnt about physiology, anatomy, histology, internal medicine, biochemistry, etc and now how come the most important of all is pharmacology? It doesn’t make sense. I didn’t entered medical university just to be a pharmacologist.

When alternative medicine declared that they are holistic-body-oriented, what about us? Aren’t we also holistic-body-oriented? If we aren’t holistic-body-oriented, how can we understand about human physiology? We can’t. Unfortunately, the fact is medical doctor itself has treated this modern medicine as separated-body-oriented which is not supposed to happen. For example, a 55-year-old man complained chest pain and fever. The result was Angina pectoris with hypertension and fever. The problem was worsening after checking the blood-sugar of this patient which was high. Sometimes high blood-sugar was caused by infection as there’s a fever, but we can’t ignore the fact of the age. If it turned out to be diabetes, how many kind of drug should he take a day? I wonder it only needed 3 kind of drugs, but I am quite doubtful. In fact, medical doctor would prescribe even 9 kind of drugs which must be taken a day by the patient.

Doctor prescribes drug, but drug is not the doctor. Trust the doctor. Don’t trust the drug. The problem is doctor trust the drug. So, which one is the real doctor? If you choose drug, then you don’t need a medical doctor. If you choose medical doctor, then what medical doctor will be without drug.
