Feature of AnxietyAnxiety is a common disorder among patients that presents a complex diagnostic dilemma. Many of the symptoms ara physical, mimicking gastroistenstinal and heart problems. From Wikipedia.com, it’s a a psychological and physiological state characterized by cognitive, somatic, emotional, and behavioral components. It’s also a symptom of defense mechanism so out of control that the individual loses her adaptive functioning mechanisms. Normally, when danger triggers a massive release of biogenic amines, the body is provided with sudden bursts of speed, strength, and courage. However, in anxiety, these outflows occur either at inappopriate times or an a nearly continuous basis. Excessive ammounts of norephinephrine, epinephrine and, occasionally, serotonin are carried to the central and peripheral nervous system.

There’re nearly 70 conditions that must be considered in differential diagnosis of anxiety. And there’re so many characteristic features of anxiety. But, here we only talk about 3 common features of anxiety. I hope, after you read this, you can take a good care yourself and your family of anxiety disorder. How? By knowing its characteristic features.

  1. Panic Disorder. Panic disorder (PD) is one of the most characteristic features of anxiety, with symptoms of fearfulness or even terror, and a clinical picture dominated by dyspnoe, a choking sensation, and palpitations. Many presentations of apparent angina are due to primary anxiety. Cardiac disease may appear to be a panic state, or PD may present as apparent cardiac disease. It is possible for female patient to have both disorders : primary anxiety + cardiac disease.
  2. Irritable Bowel Syndrome. The relationship between irritable bowel syndrome and anxiety is not as dramatic as that with cardiac disease, but the prevalence is much higher. Some 70% to 90% of irritable bowel patients have clinical anxiety and/or depression. The bowel complaints are usually associated with palpitations or angina, as well as with anxiety or panic. It’s likely to be a hypochondriasis, a psychosomatic disorder, but IBS is worse.
  3. Premenstrual Syndrome. A cyclic form of anxiety may occur in women diagnosed as having premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Between midcycle and the onset of menses, the woman with PMS may experience feelings of anxiety, irritability, hyperphagia, hypersexuality, depression, or a combination of these. One proposed explanation of PMS is the endorphin-norephinephrine hypothesis; this refers to the reduced supply of endorphin after midcycle.

As I mentioned above, there’re nearly 70 conditions that can trigger these features. Generally, they’re caused by drug intoxication, tumours, endocrine diseases, and vascular disease. For example, people with Diabetes Mellitus can show these characteristic features of anxiety. So can hypertension disease, cardiac problem, and etc.

Do you know bulimia? Bulimia is a kind of irritable bowel syndrome which is caused by anxiety. Bulimia is also called as Bulimia Nervosa. Person who get this disorder find a difficulty in eating behaviour.

Don’t let one of your family suffer from this anxiety. Find the source of the problem, and relieve the pain. Don’t let one of you waste too much time just to keep silent and miscommunication each other, unless you want to have these terrible conditions.
