Di Indonesia sekolah kedokteran alternatif yang dikenal itu cuma bidang akupunktur. Untuk bidang-bidang lain, harus mencarinya ke luar negeri dan tentunya biayanya tidak sedikit. Kalaupun dipelajari, kita masih harus berhadapan dengan paradigma masyarakat yang menentang hal-hal demikian. Saat sebuah terapi lebih berfokus pada penyembuhan ketimbang pengobatan, maka umumnya harus berjuang lebih keras untuk melawan arus paradigma masyarakat ini.

Butuh lebih dari sekedar resep agar mampu memberikan terapi terbaik buat pasien. Keberhasilan dokter tidak ditentukan dengan banyaknya antrian pasien untuk berobat, melainkan ditentukan dengan tingkat kesembuhan pasien setelah menjalani terapinya itu. Apa gunanya antrian yang panjang, jika ternyata terapinya begitu-begitu saja, malah terkesan jalan di tempat? Kita butuh lebih dari itu. Jika seorang dokter memutuskan untuk menjadi spesialis, apa yang diharapkan dari spesialisasinya itu?

Perhatikanlah di sekeliling kita. Respon manusia. Harapan pasien yang inginkan kesembuhan. Pelbagai ragam problem kesehatan yang membuat rumah sakit umum senantiasa kebanjiran pengunjung. Dokter yang bekerja seolah tidak kenal waktu. Obat demi obat diresepkan dengan harapan akan menjadi solusi terbaik. Pembedahan dan kecanggihan diagnostik semakin populer. Manusia berlomba-lomba untuk menjadi sehat dengan berbagai cara. Mereka ‘membeli’ diagnosa tersebut dengan harapan bisa sembuh. Lalu, apa yang terjadi selanjutnya?

Which one is the best medicine, conventional or alternative? Before you answer, please define ‘best medicine’. Does ‘best medicine’ mean the best solution for various health problems? Or does ‘best medicine’ mean the best medical discipline of all? Or may be the best result for any cases based on scientific evidence? Or may be the one who has the best diagnostic? Or the one who has the best therapeutic? Which one?

I told my friends about my interest in alternative medicine (note : it doesn’t mean I lost my interest in my basic medicine), but there’s no such school in Indonesia. I found other countries such as Germany, US, Australia have provided alternative schools. The reaction of my friends were dissapointing me. They said, “Stop your dream. It’s useless.” Oh gosh! What’s the problem with alternative medicine? Is it ineligible as medical treatment?

People in Indonesia always assume that alternative medicine was a kind of spiritual medication. It is based on the fact that alternative practitioners came from people who have spiritual background, so they call the practitioners as DUKUN, means medicaster. This is not true. Alternative medicine did not come from medicaster practice. In fact, alternative medicine was inovated by people who have very big concern in healing therapy and some of them were physycian or medical practitioner.

Modern therapy term usually refer to the recent therapy, which is introduced by modern medicine. The therapy includes hormon, antibiotic, surgical activity, genetic engineering, etc has been successful helping many people worldwide. This is a quite spectacular achievment. But, in this section, I want to say that modern therapy is not always refer to it. Tough the fact that recent therapy seems to be the modern medicine, the truth is modern therapy came from the ancient art.

There’re so many treatments for leukemia. In modern medicine, you might have known about chemotherapy and radiotherapy to kill the cancer cells.
